Generation Y has proved to me once again that we are the generation of instant gratification. Just by looking at a few of these blogs, it is pretty apparent that our main source of news comes from the Internet. Whoa, didn’t see that one coming. There are a wide range of websites we visited from CNN to Yahoo and even Facebook. Which also does not surprise me.
I really wonder how disgusted Hedges would feel about these blog posts. It really brings out a flaw in his argument. In some respects, he is right that we seek emotional appeal and this is probably a result of being dependent on our Internet and cellphones, but I don’t think it is as extreme as he thinks it is. Carr, on the other hand, would probably appreciate that we are actually using the Internet in a beneficial way. But he would probably argue that by constantly receiving our news online, we are at risk of having shorter attention spans.
I do not see any problem with the way our generation is obtaining news. Yeah, we probably have three other tabs open while we are on The New York Times, and we probably don’t go from one article to the next, but we are getting the news. This actually may be beneficial to us. Instead of sticking to one website, we are exploring different news outlets at once, viewing a broad range of topics. To me, it is very important to have a well-informed society. People need to understand current events in our country and around the world because these stories are affecting our lives.
